I was pretty blown away by how good KiDULTHOOD was when I first saw it. I wasn’t expecting much when I popped it into my DVD player. Director Noel Clarke managed to capture the gritty reality of being an inner city teenager, much in the same way Kids did a decade previously and it quickly became a cult-hit. So I was very pleased to see that they had made a sequel, scheduled for release in 2008 make this one of your “must-see” films this year. You will not be disappointed.

The R4DS Cartridge is the current top-of-the-line in Nintendo DS cartridges. It is just an amazing little device that is the same size as an original DS cart, it is a complete solution with no need to purchase any additional components, unless you want extra memory in the form of a microSD card (4GB max) or deal with any messy software and truly the easiest media enhancer you have ever done; To simply put it, this is a must have peripheral for any regular DS owner.
I have been playing about with one of these, that I kitted with a 2gb microSD card, they are a very nifty little thing to have. I already have 40-50 games downloaded and running on the R4, it was very simple and easy to set up. You can expect to pay £25-35 (on Amazon) to get the cartridge plus however much it costs you for the microSD (I got my 2GB from eBay for £12). One of the best things about the R4 is that it enables you to listen to music and even watch videos through your DS. There is also a web browsing application available to access the internet in WIFI enabled areas.
After watching Ross Kemp make the move from his “Grant Mitchell”, soap opera starring role, to cutting edge documentarian in his Sky One Bafta award winning program “Ross Kemp on Gangs” I was eager to see what he would do next. In the “on Gangs” series he travelled far and wide trying to get up close and personal with some of the worlds scariest gangs. He spent time with Nazi skinhead gangs in Orange County, USA and Russia, he visited different prison gangs across the world and often interviewed the leaders of these organisations, not once getting flustered by their aggression or rhetoric.
In the “in Afghanistan” series he follows British troops from the 1st Anglian Regiment on their tour of Helmand province in Afghanistan, where they are in some of the “worst fighting encountered by the British Forces in over 40 years”. He goes out on patrol with the FSG (Fire Support Group) and also on the front line with infantrymen.
One of the main things, apart from the fighting, is the disregard the British press have in their handing of the “friendly fire” accident which killed 4 members of the regiment, in the series they show helmet cam footage of this. The men Ross interviews think its horrid how the press used this story to scapegoat the Americans and sell more papers, without any thought for the families and friends involved.
This is one of the best documentaries I have seen in a long time, whereas others deal with the politics behind the war this shows us what its like day in day out to be on the front line in a modern war. If “on Gangs” got a Bafta for showing us gangster scum then “in Afghanistan” deserves 10 Bafta’s for documenting these “ordinary people doing an extraordinary job”.

Its great to see that a once great innovator in on-the-go photography printing (Remember those old Polaroid Cameras?) trying to lead the field once again. Ive looked at the scale of this device and its not exactly “pocket Sized”. Also, thinking about this from my perspective I never print photo’s anymore. However, I hope that this corner’s a market and becomes a popular device. The size of the photo’s that you get is an issue for me but looking at the success of those Japanese photo-booths that print a similar sized photo, this could prove to be quite a fun little gadget to have around.
Ive been a huge fan of his work for a few months now. I found him through the UK punk band “Gallows”
I was listening to the song “In The Belly Of A Shark” and took a moment to look at the amazing design work on their page. After a quick look around I saw Dan Mumford had been given props for doing it.
His work is extremely detailed and he tows the line between beautiful portrait work and dark war like landscapes. Some of his work makes me smile, other bits make me think. Either way his work is phenomenal and should be viewed by more people.
“ARGH!!!!! Dont put your rubbish in there, its not a bin”.
I really like this idea, mainly because I live in a rough area and it would serve two purposes. Looking cool and hiding my beloved ‘puter from potential thievery. I can totally see dumb friends coming over and putting their foil crisp packets in it though!
When I was in college me and a friend (being bored on the bus) we’re thinking about the future of telephones. Back then we dreamed of mobile internet access, calenders, video recording, MP3 players. We also thought it would be great if all this could happen on a watch.
The Hyundai W-100, which is a cell phone with a built in digital camera (1.3 megapixels). The gadget even has a touch screen, Bluetooth support, MicroSD support and plays MP3 music! No pricing or availability has been announced, but there is an English language version.
We already have mobile phones on the market that can be put on our wrists and smart phones, like the Nokia N95, have a plethora of functionality. Perhaps this one from Hyundai is one step closer to that dream that two college students had on a bus. I think we are still way off our idea of a phone/watch that could create a holographic girlfriend!
